Taking Stock
Readers and Friends,
Yesterday, I received an e-mail from the narrator/producer of my audiobooks, Peter. He is a gifted actor and vocal artist, and since I began working with him and Frankie Porter to create the audiobook editions of the Saga of the Freewilds novels, I have rarely known two more supportive or encouraging folks.
Unfortunately, it wasn't the best news. For a number of reasons, the production timeline for the second audiobook will need to be extended from a definitive August 31st to a more nebulous "Fall 2022" release.
I now believe that Vagabond's audiobook edition is likely to release sometime between late September and the end of October.
However, taking full stock of my entire experience since last September, when I first published Freewilds: The Cult & the Constable (the initial, 244,000 word novel which I have since unpublished and have been working this year to convert into the first three books of an expanding Saga), I have to say a few things:
1) I have been very fortunate, so far, to have avoided such delays! Considering how new this all is for me, I need to count my blessings, right?
2) I may have been overly ambitious and set unrealistic expectations for the timing of this project's milestones. After all, my biggest goal is still on track to bear fruit. By September 30th, the first anniversary of the launch of the now-obsolete prototype version of these stories, I wanted to have completed the initial three books of the reborn Saga and allow the same tales told in that first release to shine, anew. With books One and Two available, now, and final edits on Book Three (BASTION) in full swing, I see the light at the end of this tunnel.
3) While the audiobooks are an ideal and substantial boon to the Saga, expanding its accessibility and making it more appealing to readers who prefer being listeners, it isn't all that unusual for the audiobook version of a novel to come out a long, long time after the initial print release.
While I cannot deny my initial disappointment, I need to say that today, having taken stock of everything and with the added clarity such reflection brings... I couldn't be prouder of Peter and Frankie, happier for myself, or more excited for the future of the Saga!
